What is Refuge? What is the meaning of Refuge?

The closest synonym to our "Refuge" word in Sanskrit is "Sharanam" — that’s what you believe in, in European terms, your creed, what you direct the devotion of your heart to as the manifestation of the Supreme Truth, God in this relative world; it is your belief in specific divine forces in the Universe, your reliance on them. What is the purpose? To receive support, protection, support on the spiritual path, and, of course, to receive Divine Mercy and blessings.

We take Refuge in the lineage of deities, rishis, and holy Gurus of our tradition (parampara)-the three Gods, The Trimurti Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, our chosen Deity, the Ishta-Devata Adiguru-Bhagavan Dattatrei, the seven rishis, Sri Gaudapada, in Sri Shankaracharya, Param Guru Shivaprabhakara Siddha Yogin Avadhuta Brahmananda and in the indigenous (Mula Guru), the one who imparts to you directly the teachings, the Dharma, as Diksha Guru (initiating spiritual teacher). It is the whole parampara, the continuous lineage of transmission, of our Holy Tree of Refuge.

The Tree of Refuge represents the Guru principle — the guru-tattva — the Divine power that blesses us, awakens us, and leads us on moksha (liberation). The Guru principle manifests the Absolute in the aspect of Sat, the True being.

The Refuge has three parts, called "tri-ratna," the Three Treasures.

The second part of Refuge, or treasure, is Dharma, the Holy Teaching. It is the Holy Teaching of Sanatana Dharma, the Teaching of the Vedas, the wisdom of upanishads, itihas, puranas, the teaching of advaita, jnana yoga, laya yoga, other types of yoga, transmitted by Brahma, the Creator of the universe and also by Shiva and Dattatreya through various saints — Vasishta, Sankritiyana, Sri Shankaracharya, Paramguru Brahmananda and many other saints. It is the philosophy and spirit of the teachings, the methods of the teachings, the ethics of sadhus, and the principles of Dharma.

It is a real treasure, a true jewel, liberating us from ignorance, showing us the path, and the methods of liberation, so we take Refuge in it. We should honor it as a jewel, cherish the teaching, and reproduce it by parampara to future generations, both at the level of the monk sangha and at the family level, the parent-child relationship for karma sannyasi, so it would be good if karma sannyasi families had ancestral lines of transmission.

Finally, the third part of the Refuge is the sangha, the assembly of disciples of one Guru (guru-bhai), practitioners of different statuses and modes — brahmachari, grihastha, karma-sannyasi, vanaprastha, monks, laypeople, sannyasi. The Sangha is the divine mandala in which we grow; it is essential on the spiritual path because it creates the conditions for our realization and preserves the first two jewels. It manifests an aspect of the Absolute called "ananda" — the energy play of absolute bliss. It is the Absolute manifested through the Dharma devotees in its play, its dynamics in this material world.

(accepting) Creed of Sanctuary
Preparations to online ceremony (accepting) Creed of Sanctuary
Preliminary preparations
To accept distance Creed independently. Be familiar with traditional issues

How to prepare?
The date and place of the ritual should be arranged with the coordinator in advance. On the eve of the ritual, it is necessary to read the text of the Creed itself and the Precious Instructions of the Ten Acharas

You should print A4 sheets:
You should bring them with you to the ritual, put them beside you so that you can read them out at the right moment. You should keep the scrolls on the altar in a beautiful case or tie them with a red thread

On the appointed day one should do the following: take ablutions in the morning, refrain from eating until the ritual, recite the mantra (OM or ishta-devata's mantra) in the morning if possible, and then in clean clothes (preferably white) come to the ritual site, bring and prepare an offering of flowers, fruits, nuts to offer on the altar, put everything on a beautiful dish and put flowers in a vase

What to offer?
The person receiving the Creed makes an abundant offering, which he or she places on the altar before the ritual begins-fruits, sweets, flowers, and a monetary donation to the monastery, roughly in the amount of a tithe (of his or her average monthly income).
How is this happening?
The ritual meditation is performed by a monk in front of the altar. During the ritual, the seeker reads out the texts: the vows to the mahavratas, the five duties, and the text of the Creed. The duration is about one hour
The main vows of the layman involve the fulfillment of five basic duties, the five vows of yama-niyama (mahavratam), and the following of five duties (pancha-nitya karma).

The Five Vows (Mahavratam):
1. Ahimsa - not to kill, not to cause harm.
2. Asteya - not to steal, not to usurp someone else's property.
3. Satya - to keep to the truth, dharma and not to lie.
4. Brahmacharya - means to control sexual energy, try not to lose seed, not to make others suffer through wrong sexual behavior (no cheating, no adultery)
5. Not to drink alcohol and not to use intoxicating substances

The five duties (pancha-nitya karma):
1. Upasana: Worship on the home altar or in the temple
2. Utsava: participation in various Hindu festivals and holy days both at home and in the temple
3. Dharma: to live according to high moral and ethical values; to do one's duty and behave in harmony; to respect one's elders and sanyasins; to honor religious values, especially the principles of non-violence and compassion
4. Tirthayatra: Pilgrimages to holy places and temples to seek blessings or inspiration from saints
5. Samskara: observance of various Hindu rituals

After accepting Creed

REQUIREMENTS: After completing the preliminary practices, the seeker should read once the texts: "Yoga Vasishtha" and "Tripura Rahasya" and write a Treatise, "The Qualities of a Disciple in Tradition."

The goal of the preliminary practices is to form the outlook of the student who has entered the tradition at the level of the first jnana-bhumi. After mastering the preliminary practices, a student can proceed to the basic practices, progressing through the stages of learning.
  • Try to take lessons on the doctrine taught by monks, get the preliminary and basic practices from them, explanations of them for daily independent yoga practice in the Siddha tradition and start doing them at home in the morning and evening
  • Start living according to the principles of grihastha or karma-sannyasa in accordance with the principles. Prepare for karma-sannyasa diksha or grihastha diksha
  • Start learning and doing the daily practices of upasana, the invocation of the divine blessings of the line of teachings at the altar, sutra practice in the morning, and bhajan mandala in the evening
  • Begin to learn and practice. To do this, the community has a correspondence system for 12 courses of study and practice. Email to the ashram to enroll courses
  • Choose a dharma serving according to your skills after consulting with coordinator Omkar

One of the Three Jewels — Sangha
A Sangha — is a collection of disciples of one Guru, practitioners of different statuses and ways: laypeople, brahmacharis, grihasthas, karma sannyasis, vanaprasthasis, monks, sannyasis. The Sangha — is the divine mandala in which we grow. It is essential on the spiritual path because it creates the conditions for our realization and preserves the first two jewels. It is the manifestation of the Absolute in the aspect of ananda — the energy play of absolute bliss. It is the Absolute manifested through the Dharma devotees in its play, its dynamics in this material world.

In our Teachings, Sanhga is sufficiently manifested. There are Dharma Centers and Dharma Groups open for practice in many cities. There are also ashrams in many countries where you can go by agreement with the monks.
