What is Refuge? What is the meaning of Refuge?

The closest synonym to our "Refuge" word in Sanskrit is "Sharanam" — that’s what you believe in, in European terms, your creed, what you direct the devotion of your heart to as the manifestation of the Supreme Truth, God in this relative world; it is your belief in specific divine forces in the Universe, your reliance on them. What is the purpose? To receive support, protection, support on the spiritual path, and, of course, to receive Divine Mercy and blessings.

We take Refuge in the lineage of deities, rishis, and holy Gurus of our tradition (parampara)-the three Gods, The Trimurti Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, our chosen Deity, the Ishta-Devata Adiguru-Bhagavan Dattatrei, the seven rishis, Sri Gaudapada, in Sri Shankaracharya, Param Guru Shivaprabhakara Siddha Yogin Avadhuta Brahmananda and in the indigenous (Mula Guru), the one who imparts to you directly the teachings, the Dharma, as Diksha Guru (initiating spiritual teacher). It is the whole parampara, the continuous lineage of transmission, of our Holy Tree of Refuge.

The Tree of Refuge represents the Guru principle — the guru-tattva — the Divine power that blesses us, awakens us, and leads us on moksha (liberation). The Guru principle manifests the Absolute in the aspect of Sat, the True being.

The Refuge has three parts, called "tri-ratna," the Three Treasures.

The second part of Refuge, or treasure, is Dharma, the Holy Teaching. It is the Holy Teaching of Sanatana Dharma, the Teaching of the Vedas, the wisdom of upanishads, itihas, puranas, the teaching of advaita, jnana yoga, laya yoga, other types of yoga, transmitted by Brahma, the Creator of the universe and also by Shiva and Dattatreya through various saints — Vasishta, Sankritiyana, Sri Shankaracharya, Paramguru Brahmananda and many other saints. It is the philosophy and spirit of the teachings, the methods of the teachings, the ethics of sadhus, and the principles of Dharma.

It is a real treasure, a true jewel, liberating us from ignorance, showing us the path, and the methods of liberation, so we take Refuge in it. We should honor it as a jewel, cherish the teaching, and reproduce it by parampara to future generations, both at the level of the monk sangha and at the family level, the parent-child relationship for karma sannyasi, so it would be good if karma sannyasi families had ancestral lines of transmission.

Finally, the third part of the Refuge is the sangha, the assembly of disciples of one Guru (guru-bhai), practitioners of different statuses and modes — brahmachari, grihastha, karma-sannyasi, vanaprastha, monks, laypeople, sannyasi. The Sangha is the divine mandala in which we grow; it is essential on the spiritual path because it creates the conditions for our realization and preserves the first two jewels. It manifests an aspect of the Absolute called "ananda" — the energy play of absolute bliss. It is the Absolute manifested through the Dharma devotees in its play, its dynamics in this material world.

How to take Refuge in the tradition of Guru Swami Vishnudevananda Giri
There are two levels of the Creed in our school’s tradition. Each of them one can take in person or by correspondence.

Basic Refuge Creed: This type of Creed is suitable for seekers seeking to walk the Guru’s Path of Teaching. These seekers intend to follow the rules established in the Sangha and the Guru’s precepts. They have the status of a "disciple," the level of a student in the WSDC (World Sanatana Dharma Community). Learn more about how to receive the Creed of Refuge.

There is also the option to receive Sanatana Dharma Faith Creed. This type of Creed is suitable for practitioners of different traditions who have yet to be ready to receive only our practice. Sanatana Dharma Creed initiation is possible by prior arrangement. Fill out the form, and then you will be told in detail how to go through the ceremony.
Based on these types of taking the Creed admission, we give people access to information, informational and educational resources (chats and groups in social networks, websites), and the conditions of attending events and living in WSDC ashrams are determined. Both Creeds are accepted in absentia, then in person upon arrival at the ashram or a seminar (only the Creed of Refuge).
Two ways of accepting the essential
Creed of the Doctrine, the Refuge
  • One can come to the ashram or at a Refugee-acceptance event. For an explanation of the details of the ceremony and upon arrival at the ashram, please get in touch with the ashram's representative in advance
Sign up for the ceremony in person
  • If you want to take Refuge online, you should do the ritual of taking Refuge at home in absentia. The ceremony is then performed online by prior discussion with the monk. To solidify the connection, performing the ceremony in person at an ashram or event is beneficial
Sign up for an online ceremony

Preparing to receive the in-person Symbol of the Faith Refuge
Prior Theoretical Preparation
Basic concepts of the Doctrine should be studied so that just before the ritual of taking the Creed, one should be able to pass a small written test and be well-versed in the traditional issues.

How to prepare?
One should arrange in advance the date and place of the ritual with the monk—the day before it is necessary to get acquainted with the text of the Creed itself. On the appointed day, please abstain from meals before the ritual, recite the mantra as far as possible, come to the place of ceremony in clean clothes (white is preferable), bring and prepare an offering of flowers, fruits, and nuts for an offering on an altar, that is to put everything on a beautiful plate and put the flowers in a vase.

What to offer?
The recipient of the Creed makes an abundant offering on the altar before the ritual begins - fruit, sweets, flowers, and a monetary donation to the ashram in the amount of a tithe (from your average monthly income).
